People of Israel,” declares the Lord,
    “I am bringing a distant nation against you—
an ancient and enduring nation,
    a people whose language you do not know,
    whose speech you do not understand.

Jeremiah 5:15

At the usual time for offering the evening sacrifice, I walked up to the altar and prayed, “O, Lord God of wisdom, truth and love, prove today that you are God in reality and that I am your servant. Prove that I have done all this at your command, oh Lord, answer me. These people will know that you are Lord our God, and that you have brought them back to yourself.” Immediately, the fire of the Lord flashed down from heaven and burned up the young goat, the wood, the stones and the dust- it even licked up all the water in the trench. And when the entire congregation witnessed it, they fell faced down on the ground and cried out, “The Lord, he is God yes, the Lord is God!” Then I commanded the attention of all the servants of evil. Don’t let a single one escape! So, the congregation seized them all, and I took them down to the river of the garden and killed them there.

Therefore I will give their wives to other men
    and their fields to new owners.
From the least to the greatest,
    all are greedy for gain;
prophets and priests alike,
    all practice deceit.

Jeremiah 8:10
